We had to wait over an hour to depart after finishing the crossing at 4.15pm. The 5pm shuttle departed at 5.30pm, as 2 people were unaccounted for. We had to wait for a DOC ranger to locate them.
It was a shock to hear that if we missed the last shuttle (5.15pm), there was a $100 extra charge for a later pick-up. Less fit people that book a later morning departure to the crossing could easily miss it.
Overall, I would recommend booking a shuttle if your accommodation is in the National Park. It's an easy and safe way to access the Tongariro crossing, and ensure you get out safely too. Unless you can arrange a private pick-up, it's probably safer than leaving your own vehicle on the road at the end of the route.
