Our guide took his time to explain the story of the lake, the tragic eruption at the end of the C19th and the way local Maori use their land today. The situation is completely picturesque, with bush-clad hills rolling down to the lake. We were taken to the hot water beach and to a hot swimming hole, where we soaked, chatted and enjoyed the warm sun coming through the trees overhead. We'd recommend this relaxing trip to anyone looking for a genuine, warm-hearted NZ experience in beautiful surroundings with a wealth of history.
