The Lake Mahinapua Hotel is a local institution, bringing together West Coast history and creative talent.

Take a seat in one of their Jade carving classes and learn to carve your own piece of New Zealand, with New Zealand Jade. Also known as Greenstone or Pounamu, Jade is a highly valued rock found in Southern New Zealand and has had multiple uses for generations in Maori history.

No experience with jewellery or machinery is required, the friendly local staff will pass on all their knowledge as it has been passed on to them.

Situated 12km South of Hokitika on a beautiful surrounding of native bush, lakes, beach and mountains, there’s no better place to take in some New Zeland history and take a little home with you.

Unique experience

I visited Hokitika 2 years ago during a hiking trip to try something different and still wear my pounamu around my neck every day. Thank you so much, will never forget this experience.
