Explore the world of Hobbits, Dwarfs, Elves and Men!
The full day LOTR tour covers everything a Rings fan could possibly need to know and see. With small tour groups, this gives you a personalised experience getting you right in the action and giving in depth knowledge of how the movies were made.
Wellington Rover Tours will collect you from your central city accommodation between 8.30 and 9.00am. Your morning will include the city sights and film locations, a visit to Mount Victoria and a 40 minute walk through the Outer Shire.
From here you’ll depart for Weta Studios for an insiders view of the film industry via the Window into Workshop exhibition, a guided tour of the cogs that turn the Weta Studios. A short film of the digital side of Weta workings and a little free time to explore the Cave Museum and shop will give you a film production education.
By now you’ve worked up an Orc sized hunger! Scorch-O-Rama cafe provide a LOTR themed menu, to be enjoyed either at the cafe or picnic at Rivendell when the weather allows (included in the cost of your tour, vegetarian and gluten free options available).
Then it’s time for some location scouting. Stop off at the Hutt River (Great River Anduin) and Harcourt Park (Gardens of Isengard), followed by Kaitoke Regional Park (the setting for Rivendell) and then onto where Helms Deep & Minas Tirith were filmed (now a working quarry and inaccessible to visitors).
You’ll be guided by genuine LOTR fans, who have been trained to educate and enthrall with extensive knowledge not just on the films themselves, but why Peter Jackson chose to film in Wellington and how it all came to be.
This tour is structured specifically so locations and scenes are experienced in the best possible order and is a day well spent in the capital city for Rings enthusiasts and anyone with an interest in film.

You're welcome Tracy! Thanks for your great review and we're delighted you enjoyed your day.
The tour was insightful and entertaining. Grant was a fantastic host and guide who not only kept the LOTR tour informative but also extremely interesting through trivia questions, behind-the-scenes anecdotes and a wonderful sense of humour. The lunch and then the Weta Caves experience was phenomenal and will always be cherished. Thanks Rovers Tour Group and Grant for creating such a wonderful experience. I wish them all the luck and success in the new year 2021☺️
Thank you for the wonderful review.
Great tour guide, Phil was funny and entertaining he knows his stuff about the lord of rings. The tour is definitely a plus. You could do the locations by yourself if you want to but it's really tricky to find it. In addition you don't have all the anecdotes and fun facts from the behind the scenes. You have also included a a good bunch of info about Wellington city. I really enjoyed my time.
Thank you for the great review. We love sharing our knowledge and passion for LOTR and Wellington with others.
The full day tour was phenomenal! Grant was a fantastic guide and very knowledgeable. We had a small group of 4 which was even better! It was a beautiful clear day while we were trekking across Wellington seeing different film locations. My favourite part was driving around and visiting Mirama, and seeing where the magic happens! Weta Workshop was fantastic and so was our lunch at scorch-o-ra! The tour was incredible and everything I imagined it to be, thank team!!

The best tour for LOTR fans!
Such an amazing experience. The tour has everything. Nathan, our guide, was nice, fun and full of interesting facts and stories about the movies. The lunch included is not the typical cookie + water you usually get. This is a proper huge-sized and delicious meal in a nice and fancy location. The locations are incredible and the Weta Cave tour (also included) is awesome. You get to see amazing props from LOTR and from many other cool movies and learn about the process to make them. This tour was so much fun, especially because the other people I went with were real fans as well. Best LOTR tour I've ever been to in NZ. Anyone who's a fan is in for an amazing day with these guys
