Embark on a guided or self-guided walk of New Zealand’s most active geothermal reserve, walking amongst erupting waters, billowing steam, an active mud volcano, and Kakahi Falls, the largest hot waterfall in the Southern Hemisphere.

Experience getting your hands and feet dirty in the healing mud foot pool or try your hand at traditional Māori carving at the interactive carving house.

Location

  • Hell’s Gate is located approximately 25 minutes from Rotorua City. From the city, travel east on SH30. At approximately 5 minutes past the airport, turn right towards Whakatane. Hell's Gate is 3kms down this road. Shuttle service available. Bookings are essential.

    Geothermal Walk: Complimentary guided tours run daily, please check the Hells Gate website for latest departure times. Alternatively, a self-guided map is provided.

    Duration: Self-guided walk takes approximately 1-1.5 hours; guided tour takes approximately 1.5-2 hours.

    Courtesy Coach departures: Hells Gate provides a complimentary shuttle pick-up and drop-off, available from within the Rotorua central area. Bookings are essential. Please see the Hells Gate website for the latest timetable and to contact the tour operator to arrange shuttle if required.

  • If it is raining, bring your own jacket or purchase a disposable rain poncho at Hells Gate. The rain will only add to your experience; the reserve has a noticeable increase in activity and steam during the rain.

Great family experience
