Step back in time and gain a unique insight into New Zealand's early mining history with a Freedom Tour around the Goldfields Mining Centre.
The protected 25 hectare reserve, where the past meets the present, is situated on the banks of the beautiful Kawarau River, just a 35 minute drive from Queenstown.
This self guided Freedom Tour will allow you to explore the easily accessible mining sites and gain a glimpse into its rich history.
Marvel at the many mine shafts, tunnels and the areas of ground sluicing and have a look around the Chinese Village that housed the Chinese miners who were drafted in to rework the goldfields in 1865.
The park enjoys many elevated positions offering outstanding photo opportunities and a true perspective of the substantial work carried out on the site by the early miners.
Freedom walkers are also welcome to join the guided tour so they can see a working example of how the stamper battery is used to extract gold.
Be sure to try your hand at panning for gold with the gold pans provided. With over 2 thirds of the gold still to be discovered you might just strike it rich!
Enjoy some delicious food and beverages from the Garden café on the edge of the magnificent Kawarau River and visit the gold gallery where beautiful hand crafted jewellery and collectable items are available for purchase.
The Freedom tour is ideal for families and those wishing to explore this majestic site at their own pace.
Price Includes: A map of the park to enable you to explore at your leisure

Great fun and super friendly people. They are so kind and really helped us enjoy the experience. A very family friendly environment.
Our family really enjoyed this activity and spent about 2 hours. Small children would probably get a bit bored but the length of time you stay is up to you. We found a flake of gold too!
it is a self walk around and they provide tools for gold mining, free for us to use. there is also instruction board but too bad we didn't quite get it. we couldn't catch the guided gold mining tour because it was later in the afternoon and we had to leave. thanks!
The freedom tour was good. We got to walk at our own place an explore. There was very little info to read along the way. I would recommend the guided tour if you have no knowledge of the gold miners. There is a free area to walk through in Arrowtown which provides more signs and information about the goldminers and Chinese settlers. Lucky we did this first so the self guided walk at goldfields worked for us.

wonderful
Really enjoyed this experience so much history and ones imagination can run wild thinking about how life was when it was a working community of gold miners, need a toilet or two along the walk long way back to base
