Waitangi Treaty Grounds welcomes you on a journey of discovery through Aotearoa New Zealand’s most important historic site, where in 1840 New Zealand’s founding document was signed: the Treaty of Waitangi.

Features of Waitangi Treaty Grounds include Te Kōngahu Museum of Waitangi, the Treaty House, the carved Meeting House, a carving studio and the world’s largest ceremonial war canoe.

Te Kōngahu Museum of Waitangi holds a stunning collection of stories and taonga (treasured objects) which bring to life the history of Waitangi. Discover world class interactive displays and enjoy the temporary gallery featuring touring exhibitions.


Te Rau Aroha was opened in 2020 and commemorates the service and sacrifice of Māori in the NZ Armed Forces, sharing stories of heroism, loss and restoration from the world wars and subsequent conflicts.


Visitors to Waitangi Treaty Grounds may purchase a Day Pass which includes a guided tour (50 minutes), a Māori cultural performance (30 minutes), entry to the two museums, the Treaty House, the carved Meeting House, and the world’s largest ceremonial war canoe.

Hāngi and concert evenings are scheduled during the summer months – an intimate cultural experience not to be missed.

The award-winning Waitangi Treaty Grounds is a must-do for all visitors to the Bay of Islands.

    From 1 March to 24 December tours depart every hour on the hour between 10am to 4pm.

    On 6 February each year (Waitangi Day), Waitangi Treaty Grounds closes its buildings for the day and the grounds become the location of a free festival for the public to enjoy.

Waitangi Grounds ist nicht nur für Neuseeländer sondern auch für ausländische Besucher sehr interessant.Unser Maoriguide war sehr fachkundig und freundlich. Anlage mit Museum sehr gut aufgebaut.Man hatte das Gefühl 1840 dabei zu sein als die Verträge zwischen Engländern und Maoris unterschrieben wurden. Der Eintrittspreis ist nicht ganz günstig,aber die sehr gepflegte Anlage mit ihren Exponaten muß erhalten werden!

Super Tagesausflug

Uns hat der Ausflug zu Waitangi Treaty Ground sehr gut gefallen. Wir haben die einstündige Führung um 10 Uhr gewählt mit anschließender Culture Show um 11 Uhr, das hat super gepasst! Die Führung war sehr informativ über die Maori Kultur und die Cultur Show hat einfach nur Spaß gemacht. Im Anschluss kann man sich selbst noch in Ruhe auf dem Gelände, im Giftshop und im Museum umsehen. Mit den Gutscheinen von Bookme war das sogar dann preislich recht günstig und hat einwandfrei funktioniert. Alles in allem ein toller Tag!

Wissen pur

An der Kasse wurde mir empfohlen, an einer späteren als der gebuchten Führung teilzunehmen, weil sich dann gleich die Maori-Aufführung anschließen würde und ich so vorher noch Zeit für erste Informationen im Museum hätte. Das war ein guter Tipp. Die Führung war unterhaltsam und informativ, wir wurden immer wieder einbezogen, um Maori zu lernen. Die kulturelle Darbietung verschaffte einen kleinen Einblick in die Traditionen der Maori. Im Museum selbst las ich mich immer wieder fest. Ich hatte das Gelände um 10.30 Uhr betreten und verließ es um 17.00 Uhr, als es schloss. Das sagt alles!!! Einziger Wermutstropfen: die zu kalt eingestellte Klimaanlage.
