Experience the magic of this geothermal landscape on a self-guided walk along the trail at Craters of the Moon.
Take in the incredible sights of the bubbling mud pools and steaming craters as you walk through this other-worldly landscape.
Our well-maintained tracks are easy to follow and suitable for most people, the main walkway will take you on a 40-minute leisurely stroll through the valley and the optional 20-minute upper walkway will take you up the steps for fantastic views from the lookout.
Take your time, stop for photos and enjoy at your own pace.
Loop Track - Suitable for pushchairs. Wheelchairs are permitted but some areas of the path are more difficult to navigate than others. The path is mostly boardwalk but it is recommended that you have a person to assist in areas where there is a gravel path.
Upper Walkway - A moderate walk with multiple steps (totally worth it), not suitable for pushchairs or wheelchairs.

Glad you enjoyed your visit, hope to see you again.
Very impressed. Everything presented so well, walk way wonderful, nature experience amazing
Glad you enjoyed your experience, thank you for your comments.
We went in the morning and it was a perfect way to start our day with a leisure walking experience around the steamy craters. Definitely recommend:)
Thanks for your review. Yes, the morning is definitely the best time to come especially if it is a bit cooler!
No longer as active as it was. Mud craters appear to be dried up. A few steamy bits. Other places e.g Waiotapu, etc. are much more active and better viewing. A long 1 hour walk for not a lot of activity. You can basically see it all from the viewing platform as you enter and save yourself the walk.
Mud and steam are dependent on the weather and as it is a natural attraction the landscape is always changing. Thank you for your review, perhaps try visiting us during the cooler winter months.
Well maintained track with plenty of information boards to read. Disappointed with the rubbish around the park, definitely took away from the natural beauty. It Is the budget friendly version of geothermal parks in Taupō but not the best we visited.
Yes, we agree the rubbish that our visitors discard in the Craters is unsightly. Unfortunately it is impossible to safely remove some pieces, we get what we can.

Amazing thermal experience
Me and my partner really enjoyed our walk at the park, we loved how we could experience thermal activity from up close. Also an amazing team at moon crater, very attentive and friendly. Thank you.
