Discover the magic of the wild with The Opera Dunedin's Penguin and Wildlife Tour
Learn about the rarest penguin in the world, the hoiho (yellow-eyed penguin) and experience the best possibility to view one of these endangered birds. We will begin with an overview of the work we are doing to help save the hoiho and care for all living species at The OPERA. Guests will then be guided through our reserve which is home to numerous native plant and wildlife species including the hoiho and kororā (little penguins), fur seals, sea lions, and several species of sea and forest birds. Finally, when penguins are in our care, guests will visit our Penguin Rehabilitation Center, where they can see these rare birds up close. .

We got a private family tour, and our guide was extremely knowledgeable about the penguins, taking us out to see them up close. The kids really enjoyed the experience!
Really knowledgeable and fun guide . Lovely to see the work they are doing and we were lucky to see some seals as well as penguins
During the visit, we didn´t see any penguins. Not worth it.
Kia Ora Joanantonit, Thank you for taking the time to leave a review for us and for your feedback on your tour. Yellow-eyed penguins are a rare and endangered species and are very unpredictable when returning home, and as of that we can never guarantee their sightings, but we do make the most of any viewing opportunities. Even though on your tour you did't seen any penguins, we do hope you enjoyed your experience. Again, thank you very much for your visit and we do hope to see you again! Good to see the conservation work but paid for a tour rather than a donation. Would appreciate much more time in the hide/shelter to see the yellow eyed penguins. Felt like a rip-off as seals and fantails can be seen commonly in their natural habitats. Same with little blue penguins in boxes/colonies.
Kia Ora Priyadarshini, Thank you for taking the time to leave a review for us and for your feedback on your tour. On occasion we may spend a short period of time in our hides to increase our chances at other areas of our reserve to view the Yellow-eyed penguins coming ashore, as well as viewing other wildlife. Yellow-eyed penguins are a rare and endangered specie and are very unpredictable when returning home. Again, thank you very much for your visit and we hope to see you again!
