Larnach Castle - Dunedin's Must See Visitor Attraction!
William Larnach built Larnach Castle for his beloved wife over 150 years ago and it stands proud as New Zealand’s castle.
15 years of painstaking construction by master craftsmen made this building a majestic and imposing mansion, and one of the most iconic buildings in the country. The castle is symbolic of Dunedin’s rich history and heritage and a visit to it is a must-do for locals and visitors alike.
The castle has had many uses in its time, from mental asylum, to a hospital for soldiers, to a nun's retreat. The ballroom was once even used as a holding pen for sheep long before the current owners took on the mammoth task of restoring the castle to its former glory.
Beautiful place!
Great place to visit & to learn about the history of the Larnach family.
It’s been 20 years since last visit. Displayed the history of the house well with video & info boards. Could access most rooms & not crowded ( visited on a Thursday) Rooms have info re gadgets or life back in late 1800s Choose a good weather day so you get the views from the turret Gardens in good order but I’d visit in summer for more colour
