expecting to cycle for maybe up to five hours, only to find that the power
on my bicycle, equipped with a new battery, was only good for 3½ hours.
Fortunately I had held lots of breaks along the way: one hour cycling, one
hour break in a rhythm that was twice repeated. It was on my fourth cycling
hour when returning to base that the power gave out on me.
Rather surprisingly I was then told that the road on the first four kilometres
of the sealed road to Orapiu included a hill that the bicycles are not equipped
to handle. That was not told me before I set out for the day nor was it at all
clear that that hill was any steeper or longer than any of the other many
uphill stretches I cycled. In retrospect I should just have dumped the bicycle
near some bus stop and returned to the wharf by bus.
As a result of returning fractionally before the hour I missed out on catching
the 5 o'clock ferry - and also missed out on the complementary drop-off
which would have seen me get the ferry on time.
