Tāmaki Paenga Hira Auckland War Memorial Museum tells the story of New Zealand, its place in the Pacific and its people. The Museum is home to millions of objects, is a war memorial for the province of Auckland and holds one of New Zealand’s top three heritage libraries.

With a renowned Māori and Pacific collection, significant natural history resources and major pictorial and military history collections, it holds a special place in the hearts and minds of Aucklanders. The Museum building is one of Auckland’s iconic landmarks and offers unrivalled views of Tāmaki Makaurau.

This is a rare chance to explore the underground world of the Museum, where many of our treasures are stored.

On an intimate tour of Auckland Museum’s basement, you’ll discover how we look after priceless collections and keep them safe for generations to come.

See some of the incredible objects that aren’t on display in our galleries and discover what’s tucked away in the basement! Tours are led by a highly trained Museum guide.

    Wear comfortable flat, covered toe shoes these are required as this is a safety rule in collection areas of the Museum and you will be walking on hard concrete floors.

    Time: Tours commence daily at 11:30am sharp. Late comers will not be able to join the tour.

Great experience!

The secret museum tour was really interesting! We're glad we went before they close it down for renovations and unsure when/if they will run them again. Definitely recommend going before the end of June if you can.
